Sessional upper limb clinician

Prosthetist or occupational therapist. Sessional, case by case.

ReAble Labs is an Irish medtech company building affordable, high-function prosthetic hands. Our aim is to make good upper limb prosthetic care far easier to get, both in what it costs and in how long it takes.

We're now launching a clinical services arm. We take referrals from case management and rehabilitation companies for people with upper limb and partial hand loss, and we coordinate their assessment, reports and device provision. We're looking for experienced clinicians to join us on a sessional basis as we take on our first cases.

The role

You'll be the clinical lead on each case you take. You assess the client, recommend what's right for them, and sign off the report. Your clinical judgement is fully independent: you recommend whatever device or therapy suits the client best, whether or not it's made by us.

The work is flexible and case by case. It fits around an existing post or a private practice, and you choose which cases to take.

What you'll do

  • Carry out initial assessments for adults with partial hand or upper limb loss, in the client's home or in a clinic. This covers residual limb condition, range of motion, grip and strength, sensation and pain, daily function, and work and personal goals.
  • Use standard outcome measures, such as QuickDASH.
  • Write clear, structured assessment reports for case managers and funders, setting out the options from basic to advanced, with your recommendation and the reasons for it.
  • Review and sign off the device options section, including costs, lead times and replacement intervals.
  • Attend follow-up reviews and, where relevant, fittings or training sessions.
  • Liaise with case managers, the client's GP or consultant, and our coordination team.
  • Keep accurate clinical records in line with GDPR and professional standards.

Essential requirements

  • Prosthetist: a degree in prosthetics and orthotics, for example the BSc Prosthetics and Orthotics from the University of Strathclyde or the University of Salford, or equivalent. Or occupational therapist: a degree or MSc in occupational therapy from a recognised university.
  • Current registration with CORU (Ireland) or the HCPC (UK).
  • At least 2 years' post-qualification experience.
  • Experience working with upper limb or partial hand clients.
  • Strong report writing, including reports for funders, insurers or case managers.
  • Professional indemnity insurance, or willingness to be covered under ours.
  • Garda vetting, or willingness to complete it.
  • A full driving licence and access to a car, as some visits are to clients' homes.

Desirable

  • For occupational therapists: hand therapy experience or a hand therapy qualification.
  • For prosthetists: experience fitting partial hand or upper limb devices, passive, body-powered or myoelectric.
  • Experience with medico-legal or personal injury referrals.
  • Familiarity with EU MDR requirements for custom-made devices.
  • Interest in new prosthetic technology and in working with an engineering team.

What we offer

  • Competitive sessional rates, paid per assessment, report and follow-up.
  • All travel costs covered.
  • Flexible work that you fit around your existing commitments.
  • Full clinical independence on every recommendation.
  • The chance to shape a new clinical service from the start.
  • Early access to and input on new prosthetic technology, if that interests you.
